The Royal Queensland Wine Awards have been judging Australian winemakers for 143 years. It’s the first capital city wine show held in Australia each year and so the first to judge the new season’s vintage.
Giant Steps are thrilled to have been awarded not one but three trophies at this year’s awards with the 2022 Sexton Vineyard Pinot Noir crowned Australia’s best wine.
Giant Steps has been excited by wonderful vineyard sites for years. Sexton Vineyard is a special one – the first vineyard we ever planted, established by our Founder Phil Sexton in 1997. It’s an incredible place for both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and these trophies show what a wonderful part of the world the Yarra Valley is for high quality Aussie wine.
The wine beat 1,427 wines from 200 Australian wineries. “This wine captivated the judges with its purity, fragrance, detail and concentration – it was beautifully balanced with incredible length of palate.” - Royal Queensland Awards, July 2023.
This wine is a true reflection of the pedigree of the patches we farm here at Giant Steps. 2022 was an extremely challenging growing season but the upside has been the wonderful wines that our vineyards have given us. Head of Winemaking and Viticulture, Melanie Chester, recognised the contribution of the whole team, “these wines are really a reflection of a lot of hard work and we’re stoked to have been recognised at this year’s awards”.
